And while I absolutely love cooking, decorating, and entertaining, I've always believed that the best gatherings are the ones where the host gets to enjoy the celebration, too!

Today, I'm sharing five easy Thanksgiving favorites that are comforting, delicious, and perfect for preparing before the big day.
From creamy garlic mashed potatoes to a delightful no-bake pumpkin dessert, these dishes are sure to bring a little extra joy to your holiday table.

1. Creamy Make-Ahead Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Rich, buttery, creamy, and full of comforting flavor.
Is there anything more comforting than a beautiful bowl of homemade mashed potatoes?
This version combines buttery Yukon Gold potatoes with cream cheese, sour cream, and a touch of garlic for an irresistibly creamy side dish.
And the best part? You can prepare it up to two days before Thanksgiving!
Servings: 8
Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes, plus reheating
Ingredients
3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
½ cup sour cream
½ cup warm whole milk, plus extra as needed
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Fresh chives or parsley, for garnish
Let's Get Cooking!
Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold, lightly salted water.
Bring to a boil and cook for approximately 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook gently for about one minute, until fragrant.
Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot for a minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
Mash until smooth, then gently fold in the garlic butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and warm milk.
Season with salt and pepper.
Transfer to a lightly buttered baking dish, cover, and refrigerate until ready to reheat.
Make-Ahead Magic
Prepare up to two days ahead and store covered in the refrigerator.
On Thanksgiving Day, reheat in a covered baking dish at 350°F for approximately 30–40 minutes, stirring halfway through. Add a splash of warm milk if necessary, and continue heating until the center reaches 165°F.
Didiayer's Entertaining Tip: Transfer the potatoes to a beautiful ceramic serving bowl, add a little melted butter, and finish with freshly chopped chives. It's such a simple way to make an everyday favorite feel special.
2. Sweet Potato Casserole with Buttery Pecan Crumble

Sweet, creamy, and topped with a delicious golden pecan crumble.
This is one of those wonderful Thanksgiving dishes that feels like a little taste of dessert alongside dinner!
The sweet potatoes are beautifully creamy, while the buttery pecan topping adds a lovely crunch.
It's a comforting Southern-inspired favorite that's perfect for a holiday gathering.
Servings: 8–10
Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: Approximately 50 minutes
Ingredients
For the sweet potatoes:
3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
⅓ cup brown sugar
¼ cup melted butter
½ cup whole milk
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
For the pecan crumble:
¾ cup chopped pecans
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup melted butter
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Let's Get Cooking!
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Boil the sweet potatoes for approximately 15–20 minutes, until tender. Drain thoroughly.
Mash until smooth and allow to cool slightly.
Stir in the brown sugar, melted butter, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Once the mixture has cooled enough that it won't cook the eggs, stir in the beaten eggs.
Spread the filling evenly into a greased 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
In a separate bowl, combine the pecans, flour, brown sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon until crumbly.
Sprinkle over the sweet potatoes.
Bake uncovered for approximately 30–35 minutes, until golden and the center reaches 165°F.
Make-Ahead Magic
Prepare the sweet potato filling up to two days before Thanksgiving and refrigerate in the baking dish.
Store the pecan crumble separately in the refrigerator.
On Thanksgiving Day, sprinkle the crumble over the filling and bake at 350°F. A chilled casserole may take 40–50 minutes; check the center for doneness.
Didiayer's Entertaining Tip: I love using a pretty oven-to-table baking dish for casseroles. It's practical, saves time, and looks beautiful surrounded by your other Thanksgiving favorites.
3. Classic Green Bean Casserole with Crispy Onion Topping

A creamy, comforting Thanksgiving classic with an irresistible crunchy finish.
Some Thanksgiving recipes are traditions for a reason, and green bean casserole is certainly one of them!
It's simple, delicious, and always a welcome addition to the holiday table.
This version uses fresh green beans, sautéed mushrooms, and a crispy onion topping.
Servings: 8
Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 30–40 minutes
Ingredients
2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces
2 tablespoons butter
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
½ cup whole milk
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
1½ cups crispy fried onions, divided
Let's Get Cooking!
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for approximately 4–5 minutes, until just tender.
Transfer the beans to ice water to stop the cooking process, then drain thoroughly.
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened and lightly browned.
Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, pepper, and salt.
Stir in the mushrooms, green beans, and ½ cup of crispy fried onions.
Transfer to a greased baking dish.
Bake for approximately 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling.
Sprinkle the remaining crispy onions over the top and bake for another 5–10 minutes, until golden and the casserole reaches 165°F.
Make-Ahead Magic
Assemble the casserole one day ahead, but leave off the final crispy onion topping.
Cover and refrigerate.
When ready to serve, bake at 350°F until heated through, allowing approximately 35–45 minutes for a chilled casserole. Add the crispy onions during the final 5–10 minutes.
Didiayer's Entertaining Tip: A little fresh thyme sprinkled over the finished casserole adds a beautiful touch of greenery and makes the dish look even more inviting.
4. Homemade Cranberry Orange Sauce

Bright, fresh, beautifully colorful, and wonderfully easy to make.
If you've never made cranberry sauce from scratch, you might be surprised by just how simple it is!
With only a handful of ingredients, you can create a delicious sauce that's sweet, slightly tart, and bursting with fresh orange flavor.
And because it can be prepared several days ahead, it's one less thing to worry about on Thanksgiving Day.
Servings: Approximately 8
Preparation: 5 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Ingredients
12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries
¾ cup granulated sugar
½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
½ cup water
Zest of one orange
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Let's Get Cooking!
Combine the cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, orange zest, cinnamon, and salt in a medium saucepan.
Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat.
Reduce the heat and simmer for approximately 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
As the cranberries burst, the sauce will naturally begin to thicken.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
Make-Ahead Magic
Prepare up to four days before Thanksgiving and store in the refrigerator.
Serve chilled or bring to room temperature shortly before dinner.
