Sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you have absolutely no plans.

There's something about New Orleans that makes you want to slow down, wander a little longer, and follow whatever catches your attention.

Today, I'm mixing two of my worlds, my love of travel and food with my passion for connecting with and supporting others.

I'm in beautiful New Orleans preparing to speak at the Women's Council of REALTORS® National Conference, and with a little time to spare before the day's events, I decided to step outside my hotel, explore the streets, and soak up some of that wonderful Southern charm.

Of course, I had food on my mind!

Before leaving Florida, my dear friends Norma and Renae insisted that while I was in New Orleans, I absolutely had to try a beignet.

Well, you don't have to tell me twice when it comes to discovering something delicious!

So off I went, camera in hand, in search of a café and a little culinary adventure.

A Stroll Through the Streets of New Orleans

As I wandered through the city, I couldn't help but notice how much New Orleans reminded me of San Francisco in certain ways.

There's this wonderful mixture of old-world architecture and modern city life. Beautiful historic buildings stand alongside contemporary hotels, while colorful streetcars make their way along the tracks beneath towering palm trees.

The ornate balconies, decorative ironwork, and charming storefronts give the streets so much character.

There's history everywhere you look.

And then there's the music!

New Orleans seems to have a rhythm all its own. There's something about the presence of jazz throughout the city that simply lifts your spirits.

As I continued my walk along Canal Street, I came across Café Beignet at 622 Canal Street, just outside the historic French Quarter.

With its beautiful façade, illuminated signage, green-and-white striped awnings, and inviting outdoor café tables, it immediately caught my attention.

What I didn't realize was that this particular location sits within a historic building dating back to the 1800s, with architectural details that reflect the city's rich cultural heritage.

It looked like just the place I'd been hoping to find.

And what a delightful discovery it was!

Where Breakfast Comes with a Side of Jazz

From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I had found somewhere special.

The black-and-white tiled floors, delicate white wrought-iron chairs, warm lighting, and charming décor gave the café a wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere.

It felt like stepping into another time.

But what truly captured my attention was the live jazz.

Just a few feet away, a talented trio of musicians was performing. A pianist, drummer, and bassist filled the café with music, creating the most wonderful soundtrack for a leisurely breakfast.

There I was, sitting in the heart of New Orleans, enjoying the sounds of jazz while deciding what delicious Southern dish to try.

I couldn't help but smile.

This is one of the things I love most about traveling.

You can plan every detail of a trip, research all the places you want to visit, and create the perfect itinerary. But sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones you never planned at all.

A Taste of Southern Comfort

Now, let's talk about the food!

If there's one cuisine that makes my mouth water, it's Southern cooking.

I love the bold flavors, comforting ingredients, and wonderful culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations.

And here in Louisiana, those traditions come together through a fascinating blend of French, African, Spanish, and other cultural influences.

Looking over the menu, I decided to try something that sounded wonderfully local: the Crawfish Omelette.

This French-style omelette was filled with Louisiana crawfish, bell peppers, tomatoes, and cheese, with a rich, savory topping that brought everything together.

It was served with creamy grits and French bread.

The combination of tender crawfish, vegetables, melted cheese, and flavorful sauce was lovely. Naturally, I couldn't resist adding a little hot sauce to give it an extra kick!

It was hearty, comforting, and full of the flavors that make Louisiana cuisine so distinctive.

Sitting there enjoying my breakfast, listening to the jazz, and taking in the atmosphere, I couldn't have asked for a lovelier way to begin my morning.

But, of course, there was still one very important item on my culinary agenda.

Those famous New Orleans beignets my friends had been telling me about!

Oh, Those Beignets!

Norma and Renae, you were absolutely right!

If you've ever visited New Orleans, you'll know that trying a beignet is practically a rite of passage.

And if you haven't, let me paint you a delicious little picture.

Imagine a warm, golden pillow of fried dough, wonderfully soft on the inside, with a delicate outer crust, generously covered in a snowfall of powdered sugar.

And when I say generously, I mean generously!

My order arrived with three beautiful beignets practically buried beneath a mountain of powdered sugar.

One bite, and I understood why everyone makes such a fuss about them.

They're simple, indulgent, and absolutely delightful.

Paired with a cup of hot coffee and the sounds of jazz floating through the café, it was one of those little moments that makes traveling so enjoyable.

There's something lovely about discovering a food that is so closely connected to the identity of a place.

And in New Orleans, the beignet is certainly one of those treasures.

More Than Just a Meal

As I sat there enjoying the music and watching the morning unfold, I found myself reflecting on something I've always believed.

Food is so much more than what we put on our plates.

It's an expression of culture, history, family, and tradition.

It's the stories behind the recipes, the people who prepare them, and the memories we create when we gather around a table.

And that's what makes traveling through food such a wonderful experience.

Every destination has its own culinary personality.

In New Orleans, that personality is vibrant, soulful, comforting, and full of character.

You can hear it in the music, see it in the architecture, and taste it in the food.

What began as a simple morning walk from my hotel turned into a delightful little adventure filled with beautiful streets, live jazz, delicious Southern cooking, and, of course, those irresistible beignets.

All thanks to a little curiosity and a recommendation from two dear friends back home.

Sometimes, the best experiences really are the simplest ones.

And as I head off to enjoy the Women's Council of REALTORS® National Conference, I'm reminded how fortunate I am to have opportunities that bring together so many of the things I love: connecting with people, discovering new places, and sharing the stories that make each journey special.

From my table in New Orleans to yours, here's to following your curiosity, savoring delicious food, and finding joy in the unexpected moments along the way.

With love,
